Influenza activity has been increasing in Texas over the past few weeks. Compared to the previous week, the percentage of specimens testing positive for influenza reported by hospital laboratories and public health laboratories slightly increased, while the percentage of patient visits due to influenza-like illness (ILI) marginally decreased.
In the Paris area there have been 9 confirmed cases of flu and recently Rivercrest ISD closed their campuses due to flu or flu like cases. The district closed its schools Wednesday and Thursday to sanitize classrooms, hallways, lockers, bathrooms and even fogging their school buses.
Other nearby schools also closing due to the flu are Sulphur Bluff ISD , Campbell ISD closed their doors Thursday for flu and strep throat. They were closed Friday as well but are expected to return to class on Monday. Cumby ISD was also closed last Thursday and Friday.
The flu can be highly contagious. Here are a few tips to try and avoid being exposed.
- Avoid close contact. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Stay home when you are sick.
- Cover your mouth and nose if you sneeze or cough.
- Clean your hands.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
- Practice other good health habits.
