A new bill passed in the Senate on Wednesday allows for teachers and custodians to carry guns while students are present.
Currently, school personnel are allowed to have guns, if the district permits, but must keep them under lock and key.
Under SB 406, they would be allowed to carry them if the district chooses to allow them to do so.
The bill passed by a vote of 28-3. Senators. José Menéndez of San Antonio, José Rodríguez of El Paso and Kirk Watson of Austin, all Democrats, voted in opposition.
Those who carry guns must be trained under Texas Commission on Law Enforcement and are required to renew their licenses every two years.
