Bond set at $1 million for murder charge || Joseph Stephens


A local man’s bond has been set at $1 million for a murder that happened early Monday morning.

Joseph Stephens is behind bars at Hunt County Detention Center in connection to the murder of Demontre Diquincy “Red” Washington.

He was taken into Greenville Police Department custody following a standoff on Walnut Street.


Around 2:25 a.m., the Greenville Police Department received a report of shots being fired in the 2900 block of Walnut Street.

Upon arrival, officers located Demontre Diquincy “Red” Washington lying in the roadway. Washington, who had an apparent gunshot wound, was transported to Hunt Regional Medical Center. Washington died as a result of his injuries.

While investigating the crime scene, officers were provided information that the suspect, now believed to be Joseph Stephens, had gone into a residence at the 2900 block of Walnut Street. Officers attempted to make contact with the suspect, who refused to exit the house. The Greenville Police Department Tactical Team and negotiators responded to the scene.

After several hours, he was taken into custody.
