Damien Demont Smith is set to appear before 196th District Court Judge Andrew Bench for the shooting death of a Greenville man in 2014. He has pleaded not guilty.

Smith was arrested in February for the murder of John Luis Estes that occurred at the Galleria Apartments off of Joe Ramsey Blvd. in 2014. Smith has been in the Hunt County Detention Center on a $1 million bond ever since his arrest.

On that day in August 2014, local law enforcement responded to a call of gunshots. Once on the scene, officers found 41-year-old John Luis Estes face down in the northwest corner of the property. Estes had suffered a single gunshot to the chest and was deceased.

Witnesses told the officers they had seen Estes arguing with a black man who had fled the scene.

During the investigation, several items belonging to Estes were collected and investigators were able to obtain a DNA sample. The sample was then sent to the Department of Public Safety DNA lab for testing. The results came back and a warrant for the arrest of Smith was submitted.
