Local Hallmark gift shop closing after 47 years || Jan’s Hallmark Shop

After decades of providing Hallmark greeting cards, gifts and collectibles to Hunt County residents, Jan’s Hallmark Shop at 5035 Wesley Street in Town South Shopping Center will be closing its doors one final time at the end of April. Owner Jan Weddle has announced that she will soon be retiring after successfully growing the business for 26 years.

Jan’s Hallmark Shop has been a part of Greenville’s history for nearly 50 years – originally named Hallmark Hamlet, the store opened in September of 1971. Its original owner was Don Noble, followed by Phyllis and Hubert Lytle then Jess and Mary Lee Russell for several years. Current owner Jan Weddle began working at the store part-time as a sales associate after her youngest daughter began school, and in 1993 she and her husband, Robert Weddle, purchased the store and officially renamed it Jan’s Hallmark Shop.

In addition to being a business manager and buyer for the store since purchasing it in 1993, Jan Weddle also is the sole owner after Robert’s retirement from the business. Jan’s focus has always been curating a gift shop that draws loyal customers from all over North Texas.

“I’ve had customers who’ve moved out of state tell me they always stop by the store when they are back in town,” Weddle recalled.  “Our customers are like extended family to us, and it’s an honor to know you’re part of someone’s life in that way.”

Over the years, the store’s inventory has grown from mostly collectibles, gifts and candles – expanding into new areas like jewelry, fashion accessories and children’s toys.

“I have always tried to make the store a shopping destination where anyone can come in and find a Hallmark card to celebrate a special occasion, the perfect gift for a loved one, and something unique for themselves… all in one stop,” she said.

Under the Weddle’s ownership, the store has grown and prospered – even rebuilding after a fire in 1998 that destroyed the entire store as well as a portion of the Town South Shopping Center. After the fire, they reopened as a Hallmark Gold Crown Store, offering Keepsake Ornaments and gifts that can only be found at Gold Crown locations.

Over the past 26 years, the Weddles expanded the store twice to its current 5,000 sq. ft. to accommodate the growing city of Greenville and surrounding area, and Jan’s Hallmark has been voted the Best Gift Store and Greeting Card Store in Hunt County every year of the competition.

“We have loved being a part of this community and helping our customers celebrate their special occasions, and now we’re looking forward to having more time to travel and enjoy our own special occasions,” said Weddle.

The store has already started the “Retirement Store Closing Sale.” All merchandise in the store — including Hallmark cards and stationery, gifts, home décor and fashion clothing and accessories —is currently discounted from 30 percent to 90 percent off. They will also be selling the store’s displays, fixtures and equipment.
